Demi Lovato Celebrates 5 Years Of Sobriety
Singer and actress Demi Lovato has already celebrated plenty of milestones professionally and now she’s celebrating one personally: five years of sobriety.
Lovato has been battling mental health, substance abuse and eating disorders in the public eye since age 18. Although it hasn’t always been easy, she has finally gotten a grip on her issues through supportive care and an active recovery program.
“It feels amazing. All I’ve been doing is focusing on bettering myself. It’s been quite the journey, but it’s well worth it,” she said to People magazine. “Surrendering is the most important thing whenever you’re trying to battle your demons. You have to admit that you have a problem first, and then you can overcome them.”
The singer has also garnered headlines for not only acknowledging her struggles, but tackling them head on and finding ways to help others in the process. She began incorporating motivational seminars into her performances last year, sharing her personal stories and offering advice to those in attendance.
Last year, Lovato celebrated her four-year sobriety milestone on Twitter. “This last year I experienced so much life and too much death…but I made it through… Sober. #4Years #GodsWill.”
Last summer, Lovato split up with her long-time boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderrama, who she credits with helping to save her life. “He’ll never take credit for a lot of my sobriety and my recovery, but I guarantee it, I wouldn’t be alive without him today,” she told The Huffington Post in 2015.
