Gabourey Sidibe Reveals Results Of Weight Loss Surgery

Actress Gabourey Sidibe is winning her battle with weight after undergoing laproscopic bariatric surgery and said she now feels better than ever.

The Empire star is showing off her drastic weight loss on the cover of her new memoir, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare. Sidibe secretly had the surgery last May after she and her older brother were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Sidibe has long been defiant about her weight, insisting she was fine the way she is, but said years of unsuccessfully trying to drop pounds and health complications beginning to take over inspired her to take drastic effort.

“I truly didn’t want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely [would] worry all the time about losing my toes,” she told People magazine. “The surgery wasn’t the easy way out. I wasn’t cheating by getting it done. I wouldn’t have been able to lose as much as I’ve lost without it.”

Since then, Sidibe has taken control of her health by working with a nutritionist and a trainer, as well as changing her eating habits. The surgery aided in this process because her stomach was cut in half, limiting her hunger and capacity to eat.

Sidibe has also had to address her emotional issues around food, which she does by working with a therapist. But after overcoming depression, anxiety and bulimia over the course of her life, she is confident she can tackle what will be perhaps her greatest challenge.

“It has taken me years to realize that what I was born with is all beautiful,” she wrote in the new book. “I did not get this surgery to be beautiful. I did it so I can walk around comfortably in heels. I want to do a cartwheel. I want not to be in pain every time I walk up a flight of stairs.”

“There’s nothing ugly about me. Anyone trying to convince me that I am — and it’s usually me — is wasting her time,” she said. “I was in a war with my body for a long time. If I’d started treating it better sooner, I wouldn’t have spent so many years hating myself. But I love my body now.”
