Hopper Penn Reveals What Got Him Off Crystal Meth
Money and opportunity don’t make you immune to struggles. Just ask Hopper Penn.
The son of legendary actor Sean Penn and House of Cards actress Robin Wright struggled with a severe crystal meth addiction. He recently told People magazine that his drug problems initially started with marijuana, but eventually almost killed him after a nearly fatal overdose. Sean, who struggled with drug use himself back in his heyday, was forced to give his son an ultimatum.
“I was doing a lot of stuff, but meth was the main one that brought me down,” said Hopper. “I went to rehab because I woke up in a hospital and my dad was like, ‘Rehab? Or bus bench?’ I was like, ‘I’ll take the bed.’”
Now sober, it appears that Hopper might be following in his parent’s footsteps. He’s appearing in the upcoming Brad Pitt film War Machine, set for release later this year, and is focused on his recovery in order to avoid ruining a promising career.
“Thank God I got out of that because that was the worst time in my life,” he said. “It’s not fun when it gets to a point where you just need it.”
