“Pretty Little Liars” Star Lucy Hale Talks Getting Sober

Lucy Hale

Pretty Little Liars star and country singer Lucy Hale is opening up about her decision to leave alcohol behind.

While promoting the final season of her hit show Pretty Little Liars, Hale sat down with Byrdie to discuss her journey from Memphis, Tennessee to becoming a break-out success in television.

With her 28th birthday fast-approaching, the Memphis-born actress decided that it was time to step away from alcohol and embrace her home-body lifestyle. “I think I only just figured out who I was a year ago,” she told Byrdie.

Hale has been very open about some of her personal struggles over the past few years. Back in 2012, she shared with Cosmopolitan that she once struggled with body image issues and would go “days without eating.”

“I went through a phase that was almost like my freshman 15,” she says today. “It’s so weird to see your weight fluctuate on a TV show.”

While Pretty Little Liars brought her great success, Hale has at times felt insecure next to her co-stars. “I tried to blend in so bad,” she says. “It was hard being on a show with a bunch of tall girls. I just always felt like the odd one out.”

Hale is less concerned these days. “I’m just always trying to surround myself with better people and be the best version of myself possible,” she told Byrdie. “I know it sounds obnoxious to hear people say that, but why not?”

She also said she’s tired of the Hollywood party scene, and has “no interest” in it. She’d rather stay at home with her dog and listen to podcasts. “I tried really hard to be the social butterfly,” she adds. “Becoming a part of this popular show … everyone just says yes to you, so you get away with a lot, and then you make mistakes.”

These days, Hale is on a major exercise kick, putting in a lot of time on her SoulCycle. “I go home [to Memphis], and my dad’s like, ‘You L.A. hippie with your crystals and your SoulCycle!’ I always used to make fun of those people, but now I think it’s just magic.”

Hale said that Pretty Little Liars, which finally wrapped filming last October, “was a great chapter of my life, but it’s very exciting to start over.”
